Volunteering
Habitat for Humanity has been a big part of my life since my sophomore year of college when I started volunteering with the organization in the fall of 2005. I have volunteered with several different chapters over the years, and in late 2013 due to a new job and moving to a different part of Vermont, I decided to take a break from volunteering with them and pursue other passions. The organization still holds a special place in my heart.
My love for the organization started out with doing 2 of their Spring Break Collegiate Challenge trips, which changed my life forever. I finally found an organization I could be passionate about and through which I could give back to my community, to my nation. For many years I had wanted to serve with the Peace Corps, and then somewhere along the way I had a moment where I felt like I was being given a sign. Although I don't remember the time or the place it happened, I do remember suddenly getting a feeling that I needed to be serving our communities here at home in the US and not abroad. We have homeless, hungry citizens here in the U.S., how can I "ignore" them by going abroad? God led me to Habitat somehow and it's through this organization that I am able to serve Him and practice my faith. Since I haven't been involved in Habitat for over 3 years, I'm getting the urge to join the Peace Corps again. I can't ignore this life-long dream, but for now I may go back to serving my local community.
As a non-profit organization, Habitat for Humanity relies heavily on volunteer work, financial donations and sponsorship, and donations of supplies. It is because of its ongoing need of support that I felt compelled to create a page on my blog specifically dedicated to Habitat for Humanity to help spread awarenss. Without our help, the organization would not be able to provide affordable housing to those in need.
In addition to this page, I've also written a few posts about Habitat for Humanity -
